Collaboration with Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, the beloved horror icon played by Cassandra Peterson - Elvira Autumnal Gin. What is an autumnal gin? I wasn’t altogether sure until I tried it. The gin, as expected, showcases fall-friendly notes and includes several botanicals appropriate to the season, including juniper, black cardamom, allspice, mugwort, and sage.

 

Poured in the glass, the gin’s seasonal character becomes immediately evident. Bright aromas of piney juniper and lemon join with allspice to give the gin almost a mulled wine note. On the palate, the sage and mugwort add herbal complexity to the juniper, lemon, and allspice, bringing an earthy and minty character to the gin. The botanicals are each clearly expressed in the gin and work well together. The finish is quite long as the flavors slowly dissipate.

This is a great gin to sip neat or with an ice cube. It also does nicely in a gin & tonic. I did not expect it to blend well with dry vermouth, but when I made a martini with the gin, it was surprisingly good, the gin’s herbal notes deepened by the vermouth, making for a complex and enjoyable cocktail. Now I know what an “autumnal gin” is, and I have to say: I’m a fan.
